The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen follows Tiến, a young Vietnamese boy trying to come out to his parents. Tiến’s parents speak mostly Vietnamese, while Tiến himself speaks mostly English. Despite these barriers, he and his parents still connect by reading fairy tales together. The book showcases three interpretations of classic fairytales, each told through the lens of the character telling the story. If you’re a fan of costume design in movies, you’ll love this book - the stories told are full of beautiful characters and outfits, each inspired by the imaginations of the individual storytellers. The fairytales also have many parallels to the characters’ struggles in the main story. The lovely art style and compelling story of The Magic Fish make it one of the best graphic novels I’ve read.
