Five Feet Apart is a sorrowful romance story which covers the ill-fated barriers between two seventeen-year-olds who are battling cystic fibrosis, yet are madly in love with each other. Cystic Fibrosis is a condition which poses severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body. The two teens soon find out that being too close could actually do more harm than good, so they need to stay five feet away from each other at all times. But love has no limits, and the two countlessly find a way for them to continue to keep their relationship until Stella gets her transplant. Other than this bittersweet love story, I enjoyed how the main characters influenced each other and learned the difference between mere survival, and truly living their lives to the fullest. Stella is determined to get a new pair of lungs, and Will just wants to get out of the hospital; he doesn’t care if he dies, he just wants his freedom. Is five feet apart really so dangerous if it meant they could be closer together? I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys emotional rollercoasters and tear jerkers. The adventures they had together, the tension in between not being able to touch and the big picture of love having no limits definitely touches my heart. I admire that the main characters built a dynamic of love and a relationship that the readers could see from both perspectives, without the physical aspect of it. Love aside, the book also contains content of grieving and as well as death so if you’re not comfortable reading through it, don’t push yourself. The only confusing add on to the book (which I think is my limited understanding rather than the book itself) was the medical terminology used. I would assume most people don't know too much about cystic fibrosis (I had to google), and so occasionally it was hard to visualize what the author was trying to portray. I have also read that the movie and book are quite similar so I would definitely refer to that if the storyline doesn’t quite add up to you. All in all, this was a very solid book that I enjoyed reading, surprisingly, it was not a bore because of all the medical content. Well constructed book!
