Good cinematography and acting but very slow paced.

Great, creepy horror.
Jordan Peele could take a lesson from this movie

Gretel and Hansel is an atmospheric horror film somewhat influenced by the Hansel and Gretel fairy tail. This film has amazing cinematography, every shot looks beautiful and the atmosphere is eerie, which perfectly fits the tone of the movie. However, this movie is essentially a slow and painfully boring movie that tries to be “artistic” but just comes off as try-hard. Majority of this film is spent showing tedious sleep inducing vision sequences which made me want to listen to a math lecture instead. After a while you start to realize this movie has nothing more to offer other than these visions and meaningless dialogue that barely move the plot forward. It is blatantly obvious that this movie is trying to appeal to critics or a niche audience by being unique and artistic, however even if you are a fan of these types of movies, this is the worst example of that. In conclusion, if you like atmospheric and slow burn horror then you can give this movie a shot but I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody else. Rating: 1.5 / 5

Horribly boring movie. Slow, too dark to see much, boring. Did I mention boring?

I agree with every one of the nine comments before mine. So to avoid repeating their thoughts I will merely add that the only positive element in this boring movie are the several special effects scenes that average 3 minutes. Less than 15 minutes worth watching out of 90 minutes.

Pros: Arresting visuals, creepy atmosphere, suspenseful music.
Cons: Plot? What plot? crappy script, way too long.

It's not action and it's not a slaughter-fest. It is a slow-burn, atmospheric fantasy thriller with tension that builds gradually throughout. The movie is well-made. The scenes look great. The acting, makeup, and effects are convincing, which is important with the shots used in the film. It's good if you're not just looking for blood.

I wanted to like this film, but didn't. I found it creepy, but not really scary. It was slow-moving at times, and boring. Lots of scenes have no dialogue.

I really wanted to like this movie more than I did. I was a huge fan of The Blackcoat's Daughter, the first movie by this director. It was weird and original, which made Gretel & Hansel feel flat and unremarkable. It is a fairly by the book horror movie that adapts the fairy tale. It is filmed beautifully, and the score is pretty although very misplaced. If you are in the mood for a horror movie that isn't too scary, or something that is familiar then I encourage you to give it a try.

Come, children, and listen, for the story I tell holds a lesson. A lesson that might one day keep you safe. So, gather in close and hear me well. It's the story of the Beautiful Child with the little pink cap. Her birth was a gift to her mother and father in a time of great suffering ...
The air is swirling with abundance. One need only reach out and pluck it. This is your power, to see what is hidden and to take it. A small mind believes only what it can see. Carves out a little square, waits to be taken, never wondering what governs its fate.
And really, it's the whole system that's so absurd. I mean, senselessly, we owe crop to some bishop, and we're not even permitted to feed our own...
Better that he remember you as you were, rather than as you're meant to be.
What if I had reached across and slapped him? >Would my palm have stung with pride?
Would it have killed you to smile at the man? To just say "thank you"?
- He didn't need a housekeeper.

If he's going to find his way, I can't very well be standing in it, just as he shouldn't stand in mine. I could see she was right about that at least. Let him find his own story, and his own courage to live it... just as I now go on to live mine. I have my own power to nurture. I'll help it to grow, and trust that I'll know what to do with it. I know that the choice is mine. I could feed it darkness, or give it plenty of light. I looked, and I saw, and I understood. The captor now gone and her fires all put out, they were free to go... and be at peace. And I was free. To go and never look back, or stay to build something new on top of everything that had been destroyed. I knew my path would reveal itself, and that all was required for me was to be brave and to trust myself. And I am brave. And I will trust myself.
