Opinion

From Library Staff

Another super hit from the author of Drama, Smile and Sisters. This one revolves around the Day of the Dead and takes place in a Northern California Coastal town.

This book is pretty good. I like the illustration of every scene and the characters’ features too. From this book, I got to know what the Dia de los Muertos holiday is. I hope I can be at that celebration. Plus, I enjoyed how different people in the world celebrate holidays and have different beliefs too. In addition, I liked how Catrina and her sister take care of each other. Also, the relationship between them seems like best friends. In conclusion, I definitely recommend this book to those who do not really enjoy reading and want to have a book that makes you laugh.

This book is about adventuring and I like it because when Catrina worries about her sister, I can feel her love. The book was impressive and interesting to me. Plus, I learned much about their culture. In addition, I like the ghost because he was very active and the relationship too because it seems like a best friend. Furthermore, Catria’s sister was very positive even though she was sick so it reminded me that I should stay positive even if it is too harsh. Additionally, every drawing was fancy. Also, one of my interesting parts was when Catrina and her sister were looking at the sky with a smile. Therefore, I highly recommend this book!

Ah, yes. Raina is definitely the queen of graphic novels, in my opinion- the only book I didn't like of hers was "Drama"-- it conflicted with my moral beliefs. Anyhow, this was a good book. Definitely not as good as "Sisters" and "Smile", but good, non-the-less.

My favorite Raina Telegemeier graphic novel. Surprisingly touching, as it addresses a child's life-threatening illness.

Cat's family is moving to a coastal town to help Cat's little sister Maya cope better with her chronic illness, cystic fibrosis. Cat must cope with losing her old friends, making new ones, and living in a town where everyone seems to be obsessed with ghosts. This graphic novel helps readers understand what it is like being the older sibling of someone suffering from a chronic illness. It also uses the Mexican culture surrounding Dia de los Muertos to tell the story of how Cat and Maya both come to terms with Maya's illness. This one is definitely a tear-jerker in the best way!

My child very much enjoyed this book. She said she believes most kids think it is scary, but it isn't.

Cat’s family has just moved to Bahía de la Luna, leaving behind their life in southern California. Cat is sad to be separated from her friends, but the coastal weather will be better for her sister’s health. Maya has cystic fibrosis, and the cool seaside air may help her struggling lungs. Bahía de la Luna turns out to be haunted, and the residents of the town take living alongside ghosts for granted. This terrifies Cat, but Maya is determined to meet a ghost for herself. Unfortunately for Cat, their new neighbour Carlos knows all the best spots as the local tour guide, including the abandoned mission. In order to help her sister, Cat will have to face up to her own fears.

No, girls. November first. It’s a day to welcome back the spirits of the loved ones we’ve lost. I haven’t celebrated in years
