In print for more than three decades and translated into dozens of languages, here is the audio release of the first book in The Earthsea Trilogy. This is a tale of wizards, dragons, and shadows, played in an archipelago of imagined islands. The young boy Sparrowhawk becomes apprentice to a Master Wizard; but impatience to learn faster takes him far from home to Roke Island, where he enters the School for Wizards. As a student of magic, Sparrowhawk exceeds his years in accomplishment, but pride and jealousy drive the boy to try certain dangerous powers too soon. A terrible evil is let loose in the land.

Le Guin's rich and beautiful prose, and her fine-crafted storytelling are sadly destroyed by this narrator. It is like listening to a carnival barker. I don't think Le Guin's tales should be relegated to the hushed whispers of a cathedral of wisdom (which I think is how some would have it), but I don't think this narrator had the slightest clue of what made this author worthy of being chosen one of the few women accorded the honor of being a Grand Master of Science Fiction.

I hope anyone seeking to hear the stories of Earthsea will seek out another narrator, or read Le Guin's books for themselves. Don't miss out on the wonders she has written just because this narrator has done an execrable job on this particular book.

I found this neither thrilling nor engaging. There were no moments where I felt immersed in the book, and only few where I really feared for the protagonist. The POV / narrative style is one that doesn't resonate well with me; it's too distant and removed, and never feels immediate or tangible.
