A captivating story with even more captivating characters! Leigh Bardugo’s “Shadow and Bone” builds an enchanting world, full of wonderful details, mysterious villains, and exciting twists! Bardugo creates a story about a girl who goes from zero to hero just like that. Alina must navigate how to use her newfound powers for the greater good, all while training under a general who has a much bigger destiny planned for her.
This book was bursting with adorable friendships, complicated feelings, and a blooming romance that made my heart melt. The carefully thought out magic system was enthralling, and I was constantly in awe of the worldbuilding. I also found myself sucked into Alina's conflicted mind, wondering whether she would choose to fight to save her country from war, or choose to throw her country aside in order to spend a peaceful life with the boy she loves.
I would recommend this fantastical book to any fantasy lovers or young adult readers. If you love plot twists, strong characters, adventure, magic, and the call of destiny, you certainly won’t be disappointed by this book!

Shadow and Bone is the first installment in a trilogy that follows the journey of Alina Starkov, a young soldier who has just discovered her ability to summon sunlight and is now her country’s biggest hope at destroying the sea of darkness splitting it in two. While the plot of the series is relatively simple and follows the classic “chosen one” narrative of many young adult novels, its world-building really sets it apart from the others. The main setting of the story draws heavy inspiration from Imperial Russia. The story itself utilizes a hard magic system that gives people the power to manipulate reality in very small ways. The magic system was my favorite part to read about because it has many similarities to chemistry. If you like compelling characters and rich settings in fantasy, you should give Shadow and Bone a try.

Honestly, I decided to give reading this book a try because I heard Netflix was making a tv show based on this series, and overall I thought it was pretty good. The book is about a girl named Alina who was in the army and always thought she was normal until her regiment is attacked and she discovers that she has powers. She's introduced to a society with wealth and royalty and eventually becomes enamored with the leader of those with magic who calls himself the Darkling. He believes that she's the one who can save them all, but later along the journey, she discovers dark secrets about the world she's in. This is all a very stereotypical plotline for a YA novel, but I didn't really have any problems with that. The writing was good, and I enjoyed the story. I even got a little invested in the romance aspect of it but I wasn't blown away. Looking back, I can see why I didn't fall in love with the story. Some characters are actually problematic and have major issues that, unfortunately, many readers think are attractive in a love interest. And some of the characters can also be a little annoying, but overall it's a good book and it's fun to read.
