I loved this perfectly sad story. The illustrations did a tremendous job at matching the emotions of the story. My favorite spread was the belly laugh with the grandpa holding the snake skin -- the illustrator captured this perfectly. There was so much to notice. The changing of the seasons, the comforting animals, the use of light and dark. I even thought the main characters' initial adventure hat disappearing into the gutter of the pages was symbolic. The illustrations are beautiful and the biography subject led an interesting life. I appreciated the cut paper illustrations and the text is clearly well-researched and Cory McCarthy's connection to the text and passion for the subject shine through. My 3.5 star ranking comes from I found it a bit inaccessible. I wanted the illustrations and text to be much more specific, as the mainly existed in flowery metaphors, which were lovely, but tough for me to connect even as an adult reader. The poetry quotes from Kahlil Gibran's actual text was clever, but I didn't think there was enough support around it to truly land with the intended audience. My biggest critique though is that I did not connect at all with the arrow metaphor, and it didn't seem to be illustrated on the pages at all. Part of the criteria for the highest award is for excellence of pictorial interpretation of story, theme, or concept - the story is built around the arrow metaphor, but this fell flat for me in the text and the illustrations did not seem to support the metaphor. The illustrations are beautiful and the biography subject led an interesting life. A worthwhile addition to the recently published bodies of work about Claudette Colvin and other activists at her time. The narrative was clear but I found it a bit lacking as a page-turner. The oil paintings were beautiful, but again, they didn't encourage me to keep turning the page and the painting were differentiated enough from page to page for me. A good supplement and a strong purchase for any collection, but I don't think this will take the top honor.A worthwhile addition to the recently published bodies of work about Claudette Colvin and other activists at her time. A straight-forward, lovely picturebook with captivating illustrations in the style of Alma Thomas. Color explodes on every page and leaves the reader with warm fuzzy feelings.
I absolutely think this book should be bought, checkout, consumed by readers, families, and teachers. But is it unique enough for the top medal of 2022? I don't think so. We've seen so many of these types of informational picture books in the style of the artist they're about. I absolutely think Alma Thomas' story should be told! But is this piece of work distinguishable enough to compete with the other bodies of work? I'm not so sure.A straight-forward, lovely picturebook with captivating illustrations in the style of Alma Thomas. Color explodes on every page and leaves the reader with warm fuzzy feelings.

A strong choice for a preschool or elementary read aloud. Be sure to check out the back-matter. It's well researched and supports the text well. Can see this on some best of 2022 lists for sure, but the illustrations didn't quite get there for me to consider medal-worthy. The concept of this story, especially knowing that it's true makes for a lovely picture book. I thought the illustrations were gorgeous. The colors and details will be sure to capture young readers! Would definitely recommend for storytime or for sharing with a child, especially one how loves things that go.
I think the text needs some work. Why, oh, why does it need to rhyme? It's not targeted to babies or toddlers. It's targeted to preschoolers and early elementary. There is no good reason for this book to rhyme. And I could get passed it had the couplet been good, but the couplets weren't that good. The rhyming took away from the character development, the amazing story this author was handed, and frankly, it was distracting from the illustrations. Wouldn't pass on taking home with kids or using in storytime, but wouldn't get a top nomination for me for a 2022 award. The concept of this story, especially knowing that it's true makes for a lovely picture book. The muted, somber illustrations set the tone for this story. I appreciated that there were moments of joy in the moments of bleakness. Going to spend some more time with this one and will update my review.

Bryan Collier does it again. The illustrations are stunning, the story is heartbreaking, and yet there's so much joy to be found in these pages. The illustrations are hypnotizing, especially when he starts to play the piano. It brought a tear to my eye. Bravo.Bryan Collier does it again. The illustrations on this title are truly breathtaking. I found myself assigning emotion to when the bleeds turned blue -- it was fascinating. The text is clearly well-researched and this would be amazing for curious readers or to use in classrooms. The acrylic wash is simply stunning and intentional.
